I recently switched from down firing subs in a mid to large size room with hardwood floors to front firing 15s i found the front firing sub config sounded better at least in my room and i do believe there is less unwanted resonance.
With downfiring you are firing straight down into the floor but the air is coming from all directions.
Unfortunately the sub will be placed directly behind my listening couch and i m concerned that a front firing sub s location will be more discernable from there that seems to be what brian is saying in the above post.
