Fixing barbed wire fence with hammer.
Place the hammer against the wire and anchor the loose end between the hammer claw.
Once a fence is damaged it has to be repaired immediately.
Temporary repair particularly for broken barbed wire is usually a baling wire splice.
Pull the splice wire through the loop as far as you can then lay the neck of your hammer which exists between the head and the claws underneath the splice wire and across the loop.
If there are rust spots along the barbed wire strand or multiple breaks in the strand it may be better to call your local farm fencing supplier and order a new strand of barbed wire.
Use a fence stretcher to pull together enough wire to make the repair.
Holding staples in place with needle nose pliers is a good idea.
The broken ends of the barbed wire are folded into loops.
To start the splice make a loop in one end of the broken wire and run an additional piece of material through the loop.
Slide each wire end through one of these inexpensive sleeves as shown in this photo.
While standing in front of the upright on the barb side wrap the plain wire around the horizontal strand on the left side.
Then from each half of the break remove any barbs for about 6 to 8 inches.
Baling wire is then threaded through the loops pulled as tightly as possible and wrapped off.
Before getting started on fixing a strand of barbed wire assess whether the fence can be fixed or if it should instead be replaced.

When you hammer in fence staples without any other tools it is very hard to hold without hammering your finger.
If you had a big project using staples wire fence stapler is the best tool for you.
Next put the splice wire across the neck of the hammer then around the side and down between the claws.
Always wear gloves when working with barbed wire in order to protect your hands.
Then roll the wire around the hammer making as many twists as necessary to get the wire very tight.
You ll need 18 inches of tie wire for each intersection of wire and post.
