Over time the chain attached to the switch can jam keeping you from pulling it.

When this happens the easiest solution is to simply replace the entire switch assembly.
The switch will also need to be replaced if the chain will not pull down or if it broke off inside the fan housing.
Disconnect these wires and pull out the switch.

Remove the old switch.
The small switch where the pull chain attaches should now be visible.
Replace the old switch with a new pull chain switch then place the end cap back onto the light fixture.
